Last week, we found out more information about the 2015 Acura NSX, namely that it will likely be powered by a twin-turbocharged version of Acura’s V-6 hybrid system putting its power down through all four wheels. Now, a report from Autocar suggests that the 2015 Acura NSX will gain a convertible version a few years after the coupe version debuts in 2015.
This report quotes NSX principal designer Jun Goto as saying that Honda is considering an open-top version of the NSX. “We are looking at the convertible,” Goto told Autocar. “But we have a long way to go with it.”
Although this comment is relatively inconclusive, Autocar goes on to say that Goto could not say whether it was decided to be a soft top or a retractable hardtop. The original Acura NSX was made available as a targa with a removable roof panel in 1995, but this report speculates that an upcoming convertible NSX would be a full roadster.
As far as a timeline goes, Autocar says to expect this Acura NSX convertible at least two years after the coupe’s expected debut at the 2015 Detroit auto show. This car will be powered by a high-output, turbocharged version of Acura’s three-motor hybrid system that just debuted on the 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid. The NSX will be produced in Ohio and will have a longitudinal, mid-mounted engine layout along with all-wheel-drive. Goto also told Autocar that the styling of the production 2015 Acura NSX will retain “at least 95 percent” of the exterior styling of the NSX concept from the 2013 Detroit auto show. "The production car is larger in every direction than the concept but it looks almost exactly the same," he said.
We previously reported that the 2015 Acura NSX will provide “the excitement of the Ferrari 458 at the price of a Porsche 911,” according to chief engineer Ted Klaus, so we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this hybrid supercar and, possibly, its droptop counterpart.
