Mazda 6 fans, today may be your lucky day – preliminary pricing for the all-new 2014 Mazda 6 has slipped out on the automaker's consumer site. The base 6 with a 2.5-liter I-4 and a six-speed manual will cost buyers just $21,675, including destination. The 2014 car's price represents an increase of just $155 over the current Mazda 6.
While Mazda may not have officially released the full pricing list for the 2014 6, we now know that the base car will start under $22,000 and that the high-level Grand Touring will start at $30,500. We can assume that that Grand Touring price tag is probably for a car with the standard 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder that's rated at 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque, which in GT guise will probably only offer a six-speed automatic transmission. The base car will use the same powerplant, but give buyers the choice between six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. The extra cash for the Mazda 6 GT will most likely go to things like larger wheels; a moonroof; heated side mirrors; automatic wipers, headlights, and climate control; leather-trimmed heated seats; a power driver's seat; and an upgraded sound system. A mid-grade Touring model will likely slot in between these two extremes, but we’ve yet to discover any pricing information for additional 2014 Mazda 6 trims levels.
Another unknown: how much more buyers will need to pony up for Mazda’s new 2.2-liter turbodiesel I-4. Mazda has yet to announce U.S. specifications for the engine, but in European guise, it's good for 173 hp and 310 lb-ft. Somewhere in the mix will also be high-tech features like blind spot warning, a backup camera, a navigation system, the Smart City Brake system, auto start/stop, and the automaker's i-ELOOP regenerative braking system. We wouldn’t be surprised if the automaker offers a technology package that lumps some (if not all) of these features together for an added cost.
Stacked against the competition, the 2014 Mazda 6 comes in about mid-pack on both base price and power. In the hotly contested midsize-sedan segment, the Subaru Legacy is the price leader, starting $610 less than the 6. Both the Volkswagen Passat and the Hyundai Sonata also undercut the Mazda’s base price point. Power-wise, the Mazda is down 16 hp to the Kia Optima, 14 hp to the Sonata, 13 hp to the Chevrolet Malibu, and one hp to the Honda Accord. However, Mazda is just one of four automakers to offer a manual transmission in its midsize sedan: Honda and Subaru also sell their cars with six-speed manuals, while the VW has only a five-speed. Check out the chart below for the full comparative breakdown.
The 2014 Mazda 6 will go on sale at the beginning of next month.
