Report: 2013 Chevrolet Spark Could Gain New Nose, Engine For U.S.

That the Chevrolet Spark is officially U.S.-bound isn’t exactly news, but new reports drum up speculation as to what engine will be packed underhood. We already had news of the Spark’s arrival on U.S. shores back in August, after Chevy spokesman Jason Laird tweeted the info. The Spark will come to the states as a 2013 model-year car sometime in the middle of next year. We expect to see either a 1.2-liter or 1.4-liter inline-four cylinder engine powering the tiny hatch, and fuel economy returns of at least 40 mpg. GMI is reporting that the Spark will definitely be getting the 1.2-liter for the U.S. good for around 80 hp and 80 lb-ft of torque and 46 mpg, when converted from the European testing cycle. According to the report, transmission choices will either be a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual. The changes for the North American market will not be left to the engine bay alone, says GMI – the Spark will receive a larger grille and larger lower intake. We’ll also lose the side-repeater turn signals that the current Spark wears on its front-three quarter panels. The Spark rides on GM’s Gamma small-car platform and slots below the subcompact Sonic, which launches in the U.S. in the coming months. It is about three inches shorter than a Mini Cooper, but packs seating for five in a five-door configuration. The U.S. will be one of the final markets the car goes on sale in: it is already available in Asian, European, and South African markets. Source: GM Inside News

Yo Earthbounds, I was coming out of Tijuana, Mexico and I spotted a light green Spark parked in the parking lot of the 99 cent store in Southern San Diego County. I pulled off the 605 Freeway and I went back to the 99 Cent Store to check it out. It belongs to the 99 Cent Store Manager who lives in Tijuana, Mexico but works in the U.S. I took 10 or so pictures of it. It struck me how " small " it is. It seemed only 4 feet wide. I looked inside and it seems to have plenty of room up front and mega-room in the rear seating areas. I read if you go light on the gas petal you can get up to 67.3 MPG ! A cool car ! Jim
