Refreshed 2012 Kia Soul Priced from $14,650

Kia has announced pricing for the refreshed 2012 Soul hatchback. The base Soul with a manual transmission starts at $14,650 (after a $750 destination charge), an increase of $655 compared to the outgoing model. A 2012 Soul with an automatic transmission starts at $16,450.

The 2012 Kia Soul receives slightly revised fascias, headlights, taillights, and wheels. The updates bring the funky hatch’s looks in keeping with other new Kia products. There are also a handful of interior upgrades, including better-quality materials that are said to reduce cabin noise. Hill-start control and stability control become standard for all Soul models.

More important, the Soul’s engines receive more power thanks to the addition of direct fuel injections. The new base engine is a 1.6-liter inline-four offering 135 hp and 121 lb-ft of torque, up from 122 hp and 115 lb-ft in the old 1.6. Other models get a revised 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 160 hp and 143 lb-ft, up from 142 hp and 137 lb-ft. The engines can be mated to six-speed automatic or manual transmissions; the 2011 Soul had five-speed transmissions.

As a result of the modifications, the 2012 Soul is expected to be more fuel efficient. It should return 28/34 mpg (city/highway) with the 1.6-liter engine and 27/33 mpg with the 2.0-liter engine. Later this year, Kia also will introduce an engine stop-start feature to further improve the Soul’s city fuel economy.
