Yes, Virginia, there will be a 2010 Toyota 4Runner, and it will be launched at the 2009 State Fair of Texas…
Toyota’s being rather mum on its next-generation midsize SUV, but the sole photo released squares away some of the rumors. For starters, the new 4Runner almost certainly continues to utilize body-on-frame construction, countering earlier claims that it could be a unibody crossover. We’re also expecting a considerable amount of off-road prowess from the new 4Runner -- those tires aren’t exactly designed for low rolling resistance, and the rock face they’re resting on is somewhat more extreme than a Zen garden...
From what we can see, Toyota’s designers played it safe when it came to styling. The exterior form seems to be an evolution of the current truck, although cues from the full-size Tundra pickup emerge in the front fascia, which looks beefier than before.
For now, we can only speculate on the remainder of the truck’s styling (we’ll bet evolutionary, not revolutionary) and engine options. Sources suggest Toyota’s nixing the V-8 model in favor of a fuel-efficient lineup, including a 2.7-liter I-4 and a 4.0-liter V-6.
We’ll know for certain when Toyota unwraps the 2010 4Runner deep in the heart of Texas. Visit AutomobileMag.com on September 24 to see the new 4Runner in all its glory.
