Recall Roundup: 200,000 Hyundai Santa Fes, Sonatas for Passenger Airbags

Hyundai is recalling both the 2007 – 2009 Santa Fe SUV and the 2012 – 2013 Sonata sedan regarding two different issues with passenger-side airbags – Santa Fe airbags may not inflate in a crash, and Sonata airbags may inflate when they shouldn't. Mazda has also recalled 2001 – 2006 and 2008 Tribute crossovers due to a potentially stuck throttle cable.

2007 – 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Problem: Certain Santa Fe SUVs may need to have their occupant classification system (OCS) recalibrated. Currently, the vehicles may not detect small-statured adults. If the OCS doesn't detect the occupant, the front-passenger airbag won't deploy in a crash, leaving the passenger unprotected.

The Fix: Hyundai dealers will update the OCS software free of charge once owners have been notified. The manufacturer can be contacted regarding recall number 105 at 1-800-633-5151.

Number of Vehicles Affected: 199,118 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs built from 2007 to 2009.

2012 – 2013 Hyundai Sonata

The Problem: The Sonata sedan is also being recalled for an airbag issue – in this instance, the side curtain airbags may have been manufactured incorrectly. If this is the case, the airbags may inflate without the deployment command from the ECU. There's an increased risk of passenger injury and impaired visibility if the airbags inflate in a non-crash situation.

The Fix: Starting in August, Hyundai will have dealers notify customers of the recall and have them replace the curtain side airbags at no charge. Owners can contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 regarding recall number 106.

Number of Vehicles Affected: 22,512 model-year 2012 and 2013 Hyundai Sonata sedans.

2001 – 2006, 2008 Mazda Tribute

The Problem: Certain Tribute crossovers equipped with the 3.0-liter V-6 may have an unintended accelerate problem. Inadequate clearance between the speed control cable connector (generally used for the cruise control) and the engine cover could lead to a stuck throttle when the accelerator has been fully or mostly depressed. Although the speed control cable connector is involved with the cruise control, the stuck throttle can occur no matter if the cruise control is turned on. Ford recalled 423,634 Escapes – the Tribute's mechanical twin – for the same problem last week.

The Fix: Starting August 6, Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will increase engine cover clearance at no charge. However, replacement parts will not be available until mid-August – if they aren't available, the dealer will disconnect the speed control cable in the interim until the parts come in. Customers can contact Mazda regarding recall 6812G at 1-800-222-5500, option number 6.

Number of Vehicles Affected: 217,500 2001 – 2006 and 2008 Mazda Tributes.
