Recall Central: VW Addresses Routan Wiring, Suzuki Fixes SUV Belt Tensioners

Today's batch of recalls comes from Volkswagen and Suzuki. VW is recalling the Chrysler-based Routan minivan, while Suzuki's reining in both the Grand Vitara and XL-7 for deteriorating drive belt tension adjuster pulleys.

2009 Volkswagen Routan

The Problem: As was the case with the Chrysler minivan recall announced last week, some Routans may have an improperly routed wiring harness that the lower sliding door hinge can wear through. If it does, a short circuit is possible, which in rare cases could start a fire.

The Fix: VW dealers will inspect the wire assemblies in the sliding door and power drive unit and repair and replace as necessary. The two harnesses will be strapped together and routed under the sliding door weatherstrip. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expects the recall to begin June 2010.

Number of vehicles potentially affected: 15,902

The Problem: The plastic outer portion of the drive belt tension adjuster pulley can deteriorate due to heat. A broken piece of plastic can get caught between the pulley and the drive belt, requiring increased driver effort to steer and increasing the risk of a crash.

The Fix: Suzuki dealers will replace the belt tension adjuster pulley. The NHTSA expects the recall to begin in late June.

Number of vehicles potentially affected: 46,549
