Volkswagen is recalling certain 2009-2012 VW Jetta, Golf, Jetta Sportwagen, and Audi A3 diesels for issues with fuel lines that could result in a fire.
The Problem: Under certain conditions, the fuel line for injector number two can vibrate at the same rate as the fuel injection system pulses. Over time, the vibrations could lead to cracks forming in the injector line, which could lead to a fuel leak. If fuel leaks out of the injector line and the surrounding area is hot enough, the fuel could ignite and cause an engine bay fire.
The Fix: Volkswagen will replace the number two cylinder injector line and will put vibration dampers on all four injector lines. Owners will be notified by Volkswagen and Audi of the program, and repairs will begin in November. Owners can also call Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 168,275 cars in total. They include 2009-2012 VW Jetta TDI and Jetta Sportwagen TDIs which were built between May 2008 and September 2011, 2010-2012 VW Golf TDIs made between May 2009 and September 2011, and 2010-2012 Audi A3 TDIs which were made between September 2009 and September 2011.
