In a follow-up to an initial investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of steering equipment on the 2007-09 Mazda3, Mazda will recall nearly 200,000 models, including the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 5 minivan.

The problem: Power steering failure, caused by rust contamination in pipes that connect the steering pump to the steering rack.

According to Mazda, if power steering fails, vehicles are still operable, but will require greater driver input. The NHTSA has received over 30 complaints of loss of power steering for the '07 to '09 Mazda 3. Three cases were linked to loss of steering control, which led to vehicle crashes.

The Mazda 5 is a minivan based on the same platform as the 3 sedan and hatchback. A new model will debut for 2011.

The fix: Mazda will replace the affected steering pumps and pipes.

Number of vehicles potentially affected: 200,000
