Recall Central: All Previous-Gen BMW 5 Series, 6 Series Recalled For Potential Battery Problem

A large-scale recall has been issued by BMW for all previous-generation 2003-2010 model-year BMW 5 Series and 6 Series models. Toyota is also recalling some 2012 Toyota Sienna and 4Runner models. BMW BMW is recalling all BMW 5 Series and 6 Series models built between 2003 and 2010. The Problem: In some cases, the battery cable over may be improperly installed, which can lead to malfunctions in the electrical system. It can also potentially lead to the vehicle failing to start, charring of the wires, or a fire, in some cases. BMW says it’s not aware of any injuries or accidents that have occurred as a result of the problem. The Fix: BMW plans to notify owners in writing, and dealers will need approximately 30 minutes to fix the problem. The service will be free of charge. Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: Worldwide, the recall affects approximately 1.3 million 5 Series and 6 Series models built between 2003 and 2010. In the U.S., BMW says 367,682 units are potentially affected. Toyota Gulf States Toyota is recalling 2012 4Runners and Siennas equipped with non-OEM Audiovox Electronics brand remote engine starters. The Problem: A malfunction in the remote starter module can prevent normal communication of an affected vehicle’s controller area network. If this happens, ABS and stability control may not function properly. A series of warning lights should alert drivers of affected vehicles that the malfunction has occurred. The Fix: Gulf States Toyota will notify owners of the problem, and dealers will replace the aftermarket remote starter with a new one at no cost to the owner. The recall is expected to be carried out early April. Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: A total of 363 2012 Sienna and 4Runner models equipped with the remote starter could be affected.
