2012-2013 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 (coupe and cabrio)

The Problem: Porsche found that the welds on the rear muffler of some 911 vehicles were too weak, and could develop fractures as owners put more miles on their cars. In an extreme case, the rear muffler could break free of the exhaust pipe and fall off of the car. Porsche says that no failures have been reported on customer cars yet, but the recall was initiated after a high-mileage engineering car presented with those issues.

The Fix: Porsche says it is stocking up on new, tougher rear mufflers and will soon contact owners to replace them, free of charge. Porsche owners can call Porsche at 1-800-767-7243 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 with any questions.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 2263 2012 and 2013 Porsche 911 Carreras with the base 3.4-liter engine and the stock (non-sport) exhaust system. This includes all-wheel drive (Carrera 4), coupe, and convertible models. Carrera S models or those with the optional sports exhaust are not affected.

2007-2008 Lotus Elise and Exige

The Problem: Lotus says that its oil cooler hoses may have been improperly crimped where they meet the oil coolers, which means that the hoses can detach. If this happens, oil can spray on the tires (creating a slick, and possibly causing a crash) or spray on the engine, starting a fire.

The Fix: Lotus will replace the oil cooler hose fittings and the crossover hose that connects the two coolers (on either side of the engine), free of charge. Dealers have already been notified of the issue, while owners will be notified starting March 4. Owners can call Lotus at 1-800-245-6887 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 with questions.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 451 Lotus Elise and Exige cars from the 2007 and 2008 model years.
