This week’s round of recall announcements not only touches Suzuki’s SX4 and Grand Vitara, but also the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer
The Problem: Explorers built from July 15 through December 13, 2010, and equipped with second-row 60/40 seats with manual recliner mechanisms. Seating supplier provided mechanisms that are out of dimensional specification. As a result, the center seatbacks could allow movement during forward loading, and not provide the required strength to protect occupants during a collision.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the faulty recliner mechanism with one designed to meet original specifications, and will stop selling existing inventory until the fix can be applied. Ford expects dealers will have replacement parts next week, and will begin mailing notifications to owners on February 14.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 1658
The Problem: Models built with four-cylinder engines may be fitted with an accessory belt tensioner pulley, which could contain a defective tensioner spring. This part could break due to repeated stresses, potentially causing the belt to slip or fly off, possibly rendering the alternator, power steering pump, and water pump inoperative.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the tensioner pulley with a new, redesigned part free of charge. Suzuki plans on notifying owners by February 16.
