Recall Central: 2011 BMW X3 SUVs Recalled for Steering Issues

#BMW, #X3

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a small number of 2011 BMW X3 SUVs are being recalled due to power steering issues. Last week, BMW recalled its larger BMW X5 for an unrelated steering issue due to possible cracks in the welds of the belt tensioner.

The Problem: According to the NHTSA, the affected X3s have a faulty control module in the Electric Power Steering (EPS) unit. Consequently, the unit’s failure will cause a loss in power steering assistance, which increases the driver’s risk of a crash.

The Fix: BMW will fix the faulty module free of charge. The automaker will notify owners shortly. Owners may also contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The NHTSA states that 50 vehicles are affected. Specifically, only BMW X3s built from April 27, 2011 to June 8, 2011 are included in the recall.

Actually, there will be no repair to the gears, as per the BMW 573 letter to NHTSA, they will be changed-out of 100% of the affected vehicles. If your vehicle is among the recalled, don't delay in getting the fix as this failure mode is unpredictable and instantaneous ... imagine, losing your power-assist, as you are entering a high-speed turn, or making a low-speed entry into a parking space.
