Hyundai first ran a service campaign in March to replace the brake fluid in 2009-2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans built between April 2008 and March 2012. After approximately 60 percent of the affected vehicles had the brake fluid replaced by dealers at normal service appointments, Hyundai is now recalling the approximately 27,500 Genesis sedans in the U.S. that have not had fluid replaced.
The Problem: After owners complained about a soft brake pedal and reduced brake effectiveness, a NHTSA investigation found that a valve in the brake master cylinder was corroding, leading to a buildup of a gel-like substance that prevented the valve from closing all the way. Over time, that reduced braking power.
The Fix: Hyundai dealers will drain the brake fluid and replace it with a new brake fluid that has an anti-corrosive additive. A Hyundai spokesman also noted that customers who feel unsafe driving their vehicles can call Hyundai Roadside Assistance and have their Genesis sedan taken to the dealer free of charge.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 27,500 2009-2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans that did not have the brake fluid replacement performed as part of the service campaign earlier this year.
