Ready for Launch: Chevrolet to Build 69 Examples of COPO Camaro Drag Car

Chevrolet will build 69 examples of the COPO Camaro, a car specifically designed for drag racing that began as a concept at the 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association show. The COPO Camaros are true race cars and come without VIN tags, so they cannot be registered for street use.

The COPO Camaro is specially prepared for the National Hot Rod Association's Stock Eliminator and Super Stock race categories. The car comes with a solid rear axle, roll cage, twin bucket seats, Chevrolet Performance gauges, and a racing shifter. Almost everything else, including sound deadening and all accessories, has been removed from the Camaro's shell.

Buyers choose from three racing engines, a 7.0-liter V-8, and a 5.3-liter V-8 with two different supercharger sizes, along with a race-spec Powerglide automatic transmission. The car is offered painted in Flat Black, Summit White, Victory Red, Silver Ice Metallic, and Ashen Gray Metallic.

"The COPO Camaro is going to shake up the sportsman drag racing ranks this summer and give Chevy fans a great new reason to cheer," General Motors vice presidents of motorsports Jim Campbell said in a statement.

Chevrolet chose to offer just 69 units as an homage to the number of original "ZL-1" COPO Camaros produced in 1969. Back then, the acronym Central Office Production Order was the way by which buyers could special-order high-performance variants of the company's cars.

Today, Chevrolet has contracted an outside company to fairly determine which racing customers will receive a COPO Camaro. Selected customers will receive a letter with information on how to purchase and take delivery of their race car. The COPO cars will be delivered at the GM Performance Build Center in Michigan, where the customer can opt to participate in the build process.

The price tag for each Camaro starts at $89,000, and deliveries begin this summer.
