Range Rover LRX Confirmed for 2011 Production

September 24, 2009
Rumors and spy shots of a production LRX have circulated on the Internet for quite some time, but today, Land Rover officially announced it would be pushing its concept into production in 2011 as a Range Rover.
The image above is the official rendering from Land Rover. As you can see, the production-intent LRX is a dead ringer for the concept shown at the 2008 Detroit auto show. It seems it will remain a two-door sport-ute, which appears to confirm Land Rover’s claim that the LRX will be the smallest offering in the Range Rover portfolio.
“The production of a small Range Rover model,” says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director, “is a demonstration of our commitment to investing for the future, to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers with the outstanding breadth of capability for which we are world-renowned.”
Details of the LRX’s powertrain are still undisclosed, but given the company’s recent eco-friendly rhetoric in press releaseses, we wouldn’t be too surprised to see a hybrid-electric system ultimately offered in the SUV. Production of the new LRX should begin in Land Rover’s Halewood, England, facility towards the end of 2010.
