Properly Vetted: Chevrolet Corvette Named State Sports Car of Kentucky

Automobile Staff

In addition to an official state dance (clogging), type of grass (bluegrass), and pipe band (Louisville Pipe Band), Kentucky can add an official sports car to its roster of state symbols: the Chevrolet Corvette.

Today, next to a Corvette ZR1, Kentucky governor Steve Beshear signed House Bill 104 into law, giving the Vette a sacred place among the state's regalia.

"As home to the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentuckians have long considered the Corvette to be Kentucky’s sports car and a great symbol of Kentucky pride and craftsmanship," Beshear said.

The Corvette has been produced in Bowling Green since 1981, toward the end of the C3 generation. The bill was passed as a result of efforts by Representative Jody Richards.

"This signing is particular important because the event is being held at the Corvette [plant]," Richards said, "the only place in the world where Corvettes are built."
