Porsche Prepares to Unveil Parallel Hybrid Model in Geneva, Could Be 2012 Panamera

The 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid was the first hybrid model from Porsche, but it appears that there will be another green model coming soon from Stuttgart. Porsche has announced plans to unveil a new parallel hybrid model at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

We currently don’t know much beyond the fact that Porsche plans to display a vehicle with a full parallel hybrid powertrain, as attempts to speak with Porsche were unsuccessful at the time of this writing. What we do know is that it will be the next step in its “Intelligent Performance” philosophy, under which the 918 Spyder was green-lighted for production.

We learned last fall that the German automaker was developing hybrid variant of its popular Panamera sedan. That car is slated to receive a parallel hybrid setup comprised of a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 mated to an electric motor – similar to the setup found in the Cayenne S Hybrid. When installed in the Cayenne, Porsche’s hybrid powertrain offers cruising speeds up to 37 mph on electricity alone. The supercharged hybrid powertrain produces 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque from the gasoline engine, and 47 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque from electric motor. This version of a Panamera hybrid would be a safe bet for Porsche’s unveiling; however, we also know that there is another Panamera hybrid in the works.

Just a few months ago, Porsche CEO Mathias Muller confirmed that a plug-in hybrid model based on the Panamera Turbo was under development. The Turbo’s twice-boosted 4.8-liter V-8 makes a remarkable 500 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Pairing that powertrain to a plug-in hybrid setup would be absolutely insane – assuming there is no detuning of the engine – and we hope it moves past the development stage. Porsche claims it is trying to determine the car’s viability in the market.

Stay with Automobile as we will be on hand for the Geneva unveiling on March 1. Which Panamera hybrid would you rather see make it to production?
