Porsche Left Behind as Other German Brands Post Positive October Sales

It was a red October for Porsche, which had been on an upward climb through the end of summer and the start of fall season. Regardless, Porsche is keeping a positive attitude.

"We're very pleased with our year-to-date results," said President and CEO, Detlev von Platen. "October's sales numbers are expectedly down compared to last year, due to the fact that we are in the midst of a change-over with our all-new 911 model going on sale early next year.  In addition, we have very low inventories of our Boxster and Cayman models."

All other German brands, however, continue to surge including Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz who posted 39.6 and 28.2 percent increases respectively.

Porsche – Down 14 Percent

Alright, let’s get the bad news out of the way. Every model in Porsche’s line up was down in October. The Cayenne SUV was the volume leader with 1,032 units sold, compared to 1,139 sold during the same period last year.

Audi – Up 25.8 Percent

Once again, Audi’s flagship A8 sedan posted the biggest increase for the brand with 382 units sold, an increase of 991.4 percent compared to October 2010. The volume leader continues to be the Audi A4 (2,613 units, up 5.8 percent) followed by the Audi Q5 SUV, which posted a 24.3-percent increase with 2,610 units sold compared to 2,099 during the same period last year. The new A6 and A7 are selling well with 1,186 and 655 units sold respectively. And for the past two months, the TT has surging (194 units, 133.7 percent increase) thanks to the introduction of the potent TT-RS.

Volkswagen – Up 39.6 Percent

Volkswagen is still going strong and is on its way for a record-breaking year. Every model – except the Jetta SportWagen and the Routan minivan -- was up last month including the all-new Passat, which posted a whopping 824.8 percent sales increase compared to October 2010. Its biggest seller continues to be the Jetta sedan with 11,349 units sold for a 13.7 percent improvement. The newish Touareg (725 units) and the all-new Beetle (1,516 units) posted the 2nd and 3rd-best improvement with an increase of 204.6 and 107.7 percent respectively. With the changing weather, the Eos did surprisingly well with 564 sold (up 52 percent), while the CC, Tiguan, Golf, and GTI round off the brand’s sales success by posting double-digit improvements.

BMW – Up 13.5 Percent

The X3 SAV continues to post big gains with 2,321 sold last month, an increase of 2,244.4 percent. Next up on most improved is the 6 Series, which posted 414 units sold in October, good for an increase of 762.5 percent; its platform-mate 5 Series sedan reported a slight increase of 2.4 percent with 5,044 units sold. BMW’s flagship, the 7 Series, performed well last month with 1,103 units sold, up 62.2 percent. The 3 Series takes the volumes sales leader, but its 7,748 units sold wasn’t enough to pull it out of the red (9.1 percent decrease). The Z4 convertible appears to have fallen victim to the upcoming colder months with just 92 sold, a 47.1 percent decrease. Also down are the X6 and 1 Series with a 5.8 and 40.4 percent decrease respectively.

Mercedes-Benz – Up 28.2 Percent

The three-pointed star jumped up quite a bit by posting a 28.2 percent improvement for October – the brand improved just 15.6 percent the month before. Not surprisingly, the C-Class led the charge with 7,084 units sold, an increase of 87.9 percent. The next two models on the volume leaders board are the E-Class (4,516 units, down 18.9 percent) and the M-Class (4,091, up 44.8 percent). Two other Benz SUVs also did well – the GL found 2,128 new homes (up 12.8 percent), while the smaller GLK posted a whopping 78.9 percent with 2,494 sold. The R-Class and G-Class didn’t fare as well, with both posting 46.2 and 28.6 percent decreases respectively. Also sinking is the S-Class (927 units) and soon-to-be-replaced SL-Class (86 units), down 48.1 and 58.5 percent respectively. The new CLS four-door coupe, however, is also selling well and posted 763 units sold for an increase of 192.3 percent compared to October 2010. Finally, Mercedes-Benz managed to sell 13 of its SLS AMG supercar, which is 78 percent less than the 59 it sold in October 2010.

Porsche sales being down is no surprise. Bad economy and frankly the other German makers are presenting much more useable cars with surprising performance. Porsche's, of course, have very little practical use (their sports cars) and are expensive. When the economy improves, Porsche's sales should improve.
