Porsche Design Lends Its Touch to BlackBerry P’9981 Smart Phone

With watches, sunglasses, suits, men’s fragrances, and hybrid bicycles under its belt, Porsche Design is now getting ready to enter the world of high-fashion smart phones. The studio, along with BlackBerry parent company and project partner Research in Motion (RIM), today announced the Porsche Design P’9981 BlackBerry smart phone, the first ever smart phone to come out of the studio, which first opened its doors in 1972.

Aside from brandishing the Porsche Design logo across the top of its screen, the P’9981 employs many of the studio’s characteristic styling motifs. The frame is made from forged stainless steel, and sports a flat, though not quite brushed-metal, finish. The back cover is hand-wrapped in leather, and the QWERTY keyboard is sculpted to look sleeker, with the power and menu buttons flush with the touch screen for a streamlined look.

The P’9981 runs on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, and makes uses of BlackBerry’s latest browser along with a Porsche Design-exclusive user interface. The phone is powered by a 1.2-GHz processor, and HD video recording ability and 24-bit high-res graphics are also included on its list of features. On-board memory is capped at 8 GB, though memory is expandable up to 40 GB with a micro SD card. The Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app is made possible by the phone’s various sensors, and can display real-time images of the surroundings area complete with user-generated points of interest and other interactive features.

The P’9981 will be available at Porsche Design stores later this year. There’s currently no word as to which carriers will support the phone, or how much it will cost, though word on the street is that it will retail for around $2000 and be available in (surprise!) limited quantities.

Sure, 70 million customers is "dying". Steve Jobs is still dead.

A beautiful phone for BlackBerry fans, and probably the last best gasp from a dying player in the mobile field.
