Porsche Celebrates 300,000 Boxsters and Caymans with One-Off 2012 Boxster Spyder

The Boxster roadster (and its hardtop sibling, the Cayman) has become one of the staples of Porsche’s lineup. Need proof? Porsche says it’s built 300,000 Boxsters and Caymans since the Boxster launched in 1996.

In the fifteen years since the Boxster’sdebut, Porsche has sold over 300,000 of the mid-engine drop-top and its Cayman hardtop sister model. To celebrate this milestone, a Boxster Spyder is being produced for a German customer at Porsche’s Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen production line this month, dressed in platinum silver metallic paint and Carrera red leather, a combination that echoes the original Porsche 550 Spyder.

The Boxster’s life began in 1993, when Porsche presented the original design concept -- a mid-engine roadster that blended the aesthetics from the 550 Spyder and the 356 No. 1 -- at the Detroit auto show. After much critical acclaim and strong public interest, the automaker put the car into production, with the first Boxsters reaching showroom floors in 1996 as 1997 models. Making its debut alongside the second generation Boxster in 2005 was the Cayman hardtop coupe, which added another variant to the lineup.

Currently, the Boxster comes in Boxster, Boxster S, Boxster S Black Edition, and Boxster Spyder flavors; customers have the choice of Cayman, Cayman S, Cayman S Black Edition, and Cayman R coupes. Output ranges from 255 to 330 hp across the board, and all models are offered with a six-speed manual -- although some are available with Porsche’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
