Pimp Mein Van: Mercedes-Benz Launches Luxurious Viano Pearl

Mercedes-Benz's most luxurious vehicle may no longer be the S-Class: at the Geneva Motor Show this week, the three-pointed star took the wraps off of the production-spec version of the Viano Pearl Limited Edition van. Mercedes previewed the Viano Pearl Limited Edition at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with the Viano Vision Pearl, which showed what an opulently trimmed Viano could be like. Apparently, that vision is now reality: this week’s Geneva show marked the premiere of the production-spec version, which is almost identical to the concept. Setting the Mercedes-Benz Viano Pearl Limited Edition apart from lesser Viano vas is an upgrade front fascia with revised grille and new LED daytime running lights, two-tone 19-inch alloy wheels, chrome window trim, and exclusive magno allanite grey paint. However, the interior is where the real upgrades are. Mercedes has taken the Viano's basic and utilitarian interior and swathed it in nappa leather, real walnut trim, and brushed aluminum accents. Impressively, woodwork can be found on the side steps, rear floor, and side trim panels. Seats are decked out in two-tone seashell grey and grey beige leather with contrasting stitching. With the aluminum accents, leather, and wood, the Viano Pearl Limited Edition's interior aims to evoke that of a stylish yacht. It may not be able to take to the open seas, but the Viano Pearl Limited Edition can let the bright sunlight in (or block it out) thanks to a glass roof over the rear seats that, along with the rear side glass, can become darkened at the touch of a button thanks to Mercedes' Magic Sky Control. (The same system is found on the 2012 SLK and 2013 SL roadsters.) With passengers' sight, touch, and smell sated thanks to the windows, wood, and leather, the Mercedes Viano Pearl Limited Edition delights its riders' sense of sound with a bespoke BeoSound Viano Bang & Olufsen sound system. The Bang & Olufsen system has 18 loudspeakers with four illuminated tweeter lenses. If that’s not enough to entertain your passengers, a built-in WiFi hotspot provides Web access on the go. Two engine options – one gas and one diesel – are offered on the Viano Pearl Limited Edition: the top-line model is offered with a 3.5-liter V-6 gas engine rated at 258 hp; the oil-burning offering comes in the form of a 3.0-liter common-rail diesel V-6 good for 224 hp. Both engines are mated to a five-speed automatic. European customers can begin ordering their Mercedes-Benz Viano Pearl Limited Edition vans beginning this spring, with delivery starting this summer. All this mobile luxury doesn't come cheap, either – the Viano Pearl Limited Edition will run €99,000, or roughly $130,000 at current exchange rates, about three times as much as a base Viano.
