Though the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) was postponed last week due to the Waldo Canyon wildfires that struck Colorado, the famed race has been rescheduled for August 12.
The Pikes Peak Hill Climb was originally scheduled for July 8, but organizers delayed the event after wildfires forced 32,000 Colorado Springs residents to leave their homes. The fires claimed nearly 350 homes, and also caused damage within the Pikes Peak region.
Race organizers have spent the last few days contacting the 211 drivers and their crews to find out their availability for the August 12 race. The organizers also needed to work with local hotel partners, Pikes Peak International Raceway, the Downtown Development Authority, and all relevant agencies when it came time to pick a new day for the race.
“We will have the majority of the registered competitors here for the event…but we will lose some to scheduling conflicts,” said PPIHC chairman and CEO of Colorado Springs Sports Corporation Tom Osborne in a release. “In fact, many of the drivers and racers have indicated their desire to establish a fund to benefit those agencies that have battled the horrendous fire and now support our ability to stage the race.”
Osborne said such a fund will soon accept donations from competitors and the public. Tickets purchased prior to the event’s rescheduling will still be honored, but refunds will not be made. Ticket holders unable to attend the August 12 race will instead have the option to donate their ticket to the wild fire support fund.
