De Tomaso is one of those automakers that had great cars, but fell short of achieving the iconic status of its fellow Italian marques such as Maserati, Ferrari and Lamborghini. De Tomaso’s most famous car is the Ford-powered Pantera; featuring Italian styling by Ghia and American V-8 power, the Pantera was only sold for four years in the United States in the early ‘70s.
We had almost forgot about the car that gave the metal band Pantera its namesake until two months ago, when we came across a video of a camouflaged Pantera concept leaving the De Tomaso factory. Now, word on the street is that the second coming of the Pantera is near, and that it’ll make its return at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
According to German enthusiast site Auto Bild, the new Pantera will make its return at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Reportedly featuring Pininfarina styling, and weighing around 2500 pounds, the Pantera will likely pick up where the last one left off. Auto Bild is reporting one major change over its 1970’s forbear, though: the original Pantera was powered by a 351-cu-in (5.8-liter) Ford Cleveland V-8, and almost all De Tomaso’s produced since then were powered by Ford as well. This time, however, De Tomaso is reportedly mixing it up with a GM-sourced V-8 under the hood that produces around 600 hp.
While we don’t know for sure which GM engine De Tomaso will go with, based on the size and weight of the car, as well as the estimated horsepower rating, the engine is likely either an LSA or LS7 engine. Both of those engines are reliable and proven, which may or may not be the reason De Tomaso chose to go with a GM-sourced engine instead of say, a Ford 5.0-liter Coyote or 5.4-liter V-8. At any rate, both of those LS engines are more than capable of putting out high power numbers an Italian exotic should.
