Say what you want about Vice President Joe Biden's politics, but the 69-year-old politician is inarguably one of the more colorful people working at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And an online fundraiser--coupled with a 2009 article by fake news organization The Onion--looks to make the veep more colorful by purchasing him a Pontiac Trans Am.
Biden, who's credited with helping push 2009 healthcare reform legislation through congress (at one point referring to it as a "big f***ing deal"), has become the frequent subject of Onion articles. In May 2009, the fake newspaper wrote a particularly funny article, "Shirtless Biden Washes Trans Am in White House Driveway," that caught on. Eventually the Vice President found about and read the article, and called it "hilarious" in at least one interview.
Years later, the Trans Am is back: independent fundraising website IndieGogo has a project called "Buy Vice President Biden a Trans Am." Evidently the idea had bounced around the news/satire site Fark for a while before manifesting on IndieGogo. Fundraisers are looking to raise $25,000 to give Biden (who also owns a '67 Corvette) a Trans Am, stage some sort of photo-op, and then auction the car off for charity. Proceeds from the fundraiser and auction will be split four ways, between Doctors Without Borders, the Wounded Warrior Initiative, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Biden Breast Health Initiative (run by Biden's wife, Jill). Auctioning off the car is probably for the best, considering that Biden's status as VP precludes him from driving a car; at least, until he stops working in the White House.
