Aston Martin officially announced it will produce a limited run of the gorgeous V12 Zagato it revealed at the Villa D’ Este Concours -- not that we're all that surprised, as the company has been hinting as much ever since it unwrapped the supposed "concept" at the Villa d'Este concours earlier this year.
Even so, Aston has finally made the production run official, stating its decision was based on “overwhelmingly encouraging interest from customers.” Seeing as those customers have plenty of disposable income and the Zagato itself doesn't require extensive (and expensive) engineering, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer.
Although the V12 Zagato is based on and mechanically identical to the V12 Vantage, its sensuous body is handcrafted from aluminum and carbon fiber. And to prove the V12 Zagato is more than just a pretty face, the first two were developed as endurance race cars to “honor the performance and racing heritage of previous collaborations.” Aston Martin took them to the grueling 39th ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hour race on June 25 and 26. Both cars survived 230 laps and 3700 miles in the 24 hour race 'round “The Green Hell.”
Production of the consumer-spec cars will be limited to only 150 examples, each costing at least $500,000. Each will be hand-built at Aston's plant in Gaydon, and orders are being taken on a "first-come, first-serve" basis. Deliveries should begin in the second half of 2012.
“Such style, exclusivity and fastidious craftsmanship ensures it will be one of the most highly coveted models in Aston Martin’s 98-year history,” said Dr. Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin’s Chief Executive, in a prepared release.
