This should come as a surprise to very few, but Chevrolet confirmed today that the brand-spankin’ new 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe will serve as the official pace car of the 2013 Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2013.
Shocker, right? After all, Chevrolet has served up pace cars for the last twelve Indy 500 races, so it’s not too surprising that trend continues – or that it would want its latest and greatest production performance machine to be placed front and center at the legendary Brickyard.
“It is an honor to help inaugurate the all-new Corvette Stingray at the hallowed Brickyard and further the legacy between Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500,” Jim Campbell, vice president of GM’s Performance Vehicles and Motorsports operation, said in a prepared release.
By Corvette Indy 500 pace car standards, this 2014 Stingray pace car looks rather tame. Based on a 2014 Corvette Stingray Coupe, the pace car is painted Laguna Blue Tintcoat – a production color option – and decorated only with Indianapolis 500 decals on the doors and small IndyCar Series logos on the front bumper fascia. Unlike other recent Corvette pace cars, there are no stripes, flag-themed motifs, or color-shifting paint colors to be found. Even the race-mandated strobe lighting – which usually juts from the stock bodywork in an ugly, unnatural fashion – is neatly tucked into the grille opening and rear window.
Chevrolet’s also proud of the fact it hasn’t made any performance modifications to the car, noting it retains its stock direct-injection, 6.2-liter V-8. Finalized specifications are still fleeting, but the automaker holds the engine should provide an “estimated” 450 hp. This pace car is also equipped with the Z51 “track package,” which adds 19/20” front/rear wheels, a dry-sump oil system, unique suspension tuning and gear ratios, larger front brakes and slotted brake rotors, and a few aerodynamic refinements.
In addition to supplying the pace car, Chevrolet is also providing 33 2013 Camaro SS Hot Wheels edition convertibles for use as official support vehicles during the race. Each Camaro matches the Corvette in both color and exterior décor, although the cars do make use of a black hood stripe the Corvette does without.
