Ferraris and Maseratis are so passé: German tuning company Novitec Rosso has instead turned its attention to the pert Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The transformed Italian hatchback has impressive style and performance, and also excites us about the possibility of such a car arriving on American shores.
Novitec Rosso began by developing tuning packages for the Alfa’s range of engines. A new engine-management computer increases power on the turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four Giulietta from 120 hp to 141 hp; the 1.4-liter MultiAir engine can be convinced to offer 195 hp instead of the 170 hp available from the factory. The 1.8-liter turbo engine produces 261 hp after Novitec Rosso’s reprogramming, up from factory ratings of 235 hp. There are also tuning kits for the Alfa’s three turbodiesel engines.
In addition to the horsepower changes, Novitec Rosso has prepared new exhausts for the Giulietta that have a louder, sportier tone. Special Novitec N10 wheels are on offer in 18, 19, or 20-inch varieties; all sizes are shod with grippy Pirelli P Zero tires.Two suspension kits are on offer: sports springs which lower the car 1.4 inches, or an adjustable coil-over setup that can lower the car anywhere from 1.4 to 3.0 inches compared to stock.
Novitec also has developed new front and rear fascias, the latter of which includes a diffuser and cut-outs for the new exhaust designs. The company claims that the redesigned fascias, along with new side skirts, help reduce vehicle lift at speed.
So why should we care? For one thing, this Novitec-tweaked Giulietta looks fantastic. But more importantly, the Alfa hatchback will eventually be sold in the American market. Not as an Alfa, mind you, but the mechanicals underneath will ultimately wind up into a forthcoming small Chrysler or Dodge.
That’s good news on its own -- we think even the base Giulietta is beautiful and excellent to drive. Better yet, we have reason to believe the engineers at Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) division could get their hands on it. SRT president Ralph Gilles has hinted to us he wants to add an entry-level offering to his brand’s portfolio.
