The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced its intent to investigate the 2003-2005 BMW Z4 and 2007-2009 Mazda3, increasing the potential to add more members to the national recall list.
The issue surrounding the vehicles involves the loss of power steering. The Z4 is reputedly susceptible to losing power assistance at speeds higher than 45 mph and temperatures greater than 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The NHTSA estimates that up to 48,764 Z4s may be afflicted, and the federal agency has already received reports of one crash and 107 complaints related to this problem.
The compact Mazda3 suffers from a similar condition and the NHTSA is aware of three crashes and 33 complaints. An estimated 293,787 Mazda3s may be affected, and, in all, over 342,000 vehicles could be recalled soon.
