NHTSA Investigating 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty Airbags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into the 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty in response to complaints of unexpected airbag deployment.

The investigation comes after NHTSA received five confirmed reports of injuries from airbags deploying in Jeep Libertys being driven at residential or highway speeds. Some of the owners reported that the airbag malfunction light had been illuminated prior to the incident. The regulation agency also has received 10 preliminary reports of injuries resulting from airbag deployment on vehicles without any physical damage which would explain the deployment.

NHTSA will begin investigating the reports, which could lead to a recall depending on what the investigation reveals. The issue is estimated to affect as many as 387,356 vehicles.
