A number of BMW 7 Series (model year 2002 to 2008) may have a transmission defect that may cause the vehicle to roll away. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation looking into the situation.
According to a Reuters report, the owner of a 2006 BMW 7 Series shut the engine off, exited the car, which then proceeded to roll away. The owner filed a complaint to the NHTSA, leading to the current investigation. BMW is cooperating with the investigation and has also informed the NHTSA of similar incidents reported to them by customers.
The 2002 to 2008 BMW 7 Series was the brand’s first model to feature the electronic, stalk-mounted transmission shifter. Drivers place the transmission in park by pressing a button or by shutting off the engine.
A reported 120,000 vehicles are affected by the investigation, which could later lead to an official recall if the NHTSA finds discovers a safety issue.
