New York 2013: 2014 Volvo V60 Is A Return To Form

Wagon fans rejoice: Volvo will be returning to the two-box realm of wagons early next year with the 2014 V60, the five-door version of the S60 sedan.

The move was announced at the 2013 New York auto show, and we can't say that we're completely surprised. When we spoke to Volvo Car Group President and CEO Håkan Samuelsson during the Detroit auto show earlier this year, he told us “There is a segment…people who have a sedan and want more versatility but the same efficiency.” There was also speculation earlier this month that the automaker would bring the previously Europe-only V60 to our shores to help fill out its U.S. product lineup.

"The V60 builds upon our wagon heritage, and it's a beautiful evolution in design and direction for Volvo," said Volvo Cars of North America President and CEO John Maloney. "Many consumers will be glad to see the addition of this exciting sports wagon to the Volvo lineup in America."

Volvo hasn't detailed any exact specifications for the U.S.-spec 2014 V60, but we can assume that it will mirror the S60 lineup, since the two cars are essentially identical. That means there will be two turbocharged engine options – a 2.5-liter I-5 and a 3.0-liter I-6 – the choice of front- or all-wheel drive, and a six-speed automatic transmission. In the S60, the five-cylinder is good for 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, while the base six is rated at 300 hp and 325 lb-ft. Volvo has also announced that there will be a range-topping V60 R-Design model (pictured below in red), which we assume will use the same 325-hp, 354-lb-ft version of the turbo-six as the S60 and XC60 R-Design. No word yet if we'll get any of the diesels offered in Europe or the V60 PHEV on our shores.

The 2014 Volvo V60 will go on sale at the beginning of 2014, with pricing to be announced closer to the wagon's release.
