New York 2012: Land Rover DC100, Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concepts Look Mighty Familiar

Déjà vu: Land Rover once again displayed the Range Rover Evoque convertible and DC100 concept cars. The topless Evoque made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and the DC100 concept has been shown several times in different guises.

The Evoque convertible concept, of course, hints at the likelihood of Range Rover making a droptop version of its stunning three- and five-door crossover. The car reportedly is less than 200 pounds heavier than its hardtop progenitor, and should be reasonably easy to put into production. As in the hardtop, the Evoque convertible is powered by a Ford-sourced, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine with 240 hp. It can return up to 28 mpg on the highway.

"[The Evoque] is a vehicle which truly resonates on an emotional level," said Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern, noting that about 80 percent of Evoque buyers are new to the Land Rover brand.

"The Range Rover Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible," said McGovern. "It's unique and, we believe, highly desirable."

Land Rover also trotted out the DC100 concept yet again. Touted as previewing the look of the next-generation Land Rover Defender, the DC100 is a boxy and rugged SUV that also was shown in Frankfurt, Los Angeles, and several other auto shows. This time, the concept is dressed up as an off-road expedition vehicle, replete with a powered winch, roof rack, and a snorkel to allow for wading through deep water. This version is probably closest to the way the rough-and-tumble Land Rover Defender will look when it is redesigned in the next year or two.

"This concept demonstrates our seriousness about replacing [the Defender]," said McGovern. He confirmed that the next-generation Land Rover Defender will be sold in the U.S.
