New Mopar-Tuned Vehicles Overrun Chrysler’s Detroit Show Stand

New vehicles tend to take center stage at auto shows, but Chrysler’s already revealed most (if not all) of its 2011 product enhancements. What to do? Moparize. The automaker’s aftermarket accessory division is tricking out a number of the company’s latest vehicles and proudly displaying the finished products at the 2011 Detroit auto show.

Each of Chrysler’s five brands -- Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat -- will display a vehicle fitted with a seemingly endless list of the latest Mopar accessories. If that isn’t enough, the automaker plans on sprinkling Mopar parts and add-ons among its other display vehicles. According to Chrysler, it will have over 100 of Mopar’s latest wares on display across its 57 show vehicles.

Perhaps the most interesting of Chrysler’s Moparization efforts is a new Fiat 500 show car. Although Mopar has tricked out 500s for previous shows (notably the 2010 SEMA venue), the new car receives a blue-on-black paint scheme similar to that used on the limited edition Mopar Challenger. The small hatchback receives Mopar door sill guards, black Katzkin leather seat skins with blue accents, carbon-fiber patterns on the hand brake and shift knobs, gloss black aluminum wheels, chrome exhaust tips, mirror covers, fuel door, and grille surround. Sadly, Mopar didn’t do much to improve performance -- arguably, the only accessory added that could remotely come close to exciting enthusiasts is the addition of a front strut tower brace.

We’re also intrigued by a Mopar-tuned version of the new 2011 200 sedan, the long-awaited replacement for the aging Sebring line. To infuse the 200 with some additional style, Mopar lowered the ride height by 3 inches, while gifting it with a two-tone black-and-tungsten paint job, and a number of custom accessories. Parts added include a gloss black grille surround and mesh insert, a recessed Chrysler wing badge, a new fog lamp bezel with an integrated light bar, front brake cooling vents, a vented hood, front lip and decklid spoilers, and a bright exhaust tips. Unique door trim, 19-inch wheels, and a Katzkin leather interior round out the changes.

Vehicles on display for Dodge and Jeep  -- the Durango Citadel and Wrangler Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition -- have been shown at both SEMA and the Moab Jeep Safari, but off-road junkies will perhaps be most interested in the Ram Runner, which is now available through a series of dealer-installed kits. The stage 1 package, known as the pre-runner, throws in a revised suspension system, and runs $3129. The stage 2 kit adds a complete Baja-style suspension kit with Fox Racing internal bypass dampers, bespoke upper and lower control arms, and flared fenders. That will run buyers an extra $13,270 on top of the price of a Ram 1500, and will be available come March.

If that isn’t enough to catch your attention, Mopar gurus do plan on building a special variant of the Wrangler Black Ops edition at the show, decking it out with a number of accessory parts in the process. According to Pietro Gorlier, president and CEO of Mopar, the build is designed to showcase just how easy it is to personalize and accessorize a Chrysler vehicle.

Look for the full lineup of Mopar accessories interspersed throughout Chrysler’s display at the Detroit auto show, which opens to the public on Saturday, January 15.

I'm a Fiat fan AND a Mopar fan. I don't necessarily agree that the two MUST be mutually exclusive. remember that at some point all the brands we know as Ford, GM and Chrysler were independent brands and came under one roof. We're just (mostly) too young to remember that happening. As for this Mopar-ization of the 500 I think we need to give it time. There always used to be a raft of speed options for Fiats from outside houses. I am not certain of what exists today, but I would expect there are options out there.

Mixing the Mopar brand with Fiat is a bad decision. The Fiat fans won’t want MOPAR. The MOPAR fans won’t want FIAT. Don’t confuse already confused Americans with the Fiat brand. Keep it Fiat and Italian.

It's just plain stupid that Mopar would produce an appearance package only for the 500. Mopar is supposed to be about adding performance, not window dressing.
