Despite the new sixth-generation Jetta’s cool reception among the automotive literati, the model helped lead Volkswagen to all-time monthly record sales for the model line, which includes the SportWagen model. The brand overall posted its best March monthly sales in seven years, with 27,176 units sold. The Jetta line alone accounted for 16,969 of those sales, continuing its track record of being VW’s most popular model in the U.S. market.
Quarterly sales totaled 67,039, a 15 percent increase over last year. Although not calculated separately, company executives attribute the popularity of the new TDI clean diesel models to boosting overall sales. Golf, Jetta, CC, Tiguan and Touareg sales were up overall, with Passat, New Beetle, Eos and Routan down. However, all-new replacements for the Passat and New Beetle are coming later in the year, and VW is hoping for as enthusiastic a reception for those new models as customers have shown toward the new, lower-priced, larger Jetta.
