Jaguar will use the Frankfurt Motor Show to unveil the C-X16 concept, a slinky sports coupe previewed by this sketch. The company promises the C-X16 serves as a “precursor” to future Jaguar products. In other words, a vehicle like this will be in showrooms sometime in the future.
The basic roofline and broad rear shoulders of the C-X16 seem cribbed directly from Jaguar’s current XK coupe. In fact, the concept car looks like a shorter, shrunken-down version of the XK coupe. That fits with our expectation that Jaguar will soon launch a smaller sports coupe that will slot underneath the XK.
We have previously heard that the British marque would unveil a car called the Jaguar XE at Frankfurt. Said to be inspired by the original E-Type, the new XE would reportedly fight cars like the Porsche 911 yet be priced closer to the Porsche Boxster/Cayman. Powertrain options are likely to include V-6 engines with up to 450 hp, and manual or dual-clutch transmissions. It’s also possible that the XK’s 5.0-liter V-8s will make an appearance underhood.
As 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the first Jaguar E-Type, it would be fitting for the new XE to wear E-Type heritage styling cues. The new XE may be built on the same platform that underpins the Jaguar XF, and could spawn coupe, roadster, and go-fast R versions.
Our fingers are crossed that the C-X16 morphs into a sporty, sexy sports car worthy of the Jaguar name. We’ll have full photos and information from Frankfurt next month.
