New Cadillac ATS Featured on Latest Wide Open Throttle

The 2013 Cadillac ATS tops our long list of cars we’ve been looking forward to driving this year.. Could the American luxury sedan be good enough to take on the Germans and the Japanese? On the latest episode of Wide Open Throttle¸ Motor Trend associate editor Scott Evans heads to Atlanta to test out the ATS on public roads and a closed track.

Cadillac has made its goal clear with the ATS. The premium four-door should be luxurious and sporty, two traits Evans explores during his short time with Caddy’s sedan. Inside, he’s impressed by the leather-wrapped dashboard with contrast stitching, beautiful wood accents, and hushed road noise. On the track, he samples an ATS fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, one of three powertrains Cadillac is offering with the sedan. Evans says the 270-hp turbo-four is plenty strong and even has a decent engine note. The ATS handled well on the track, exhibiting balance and control often found on BMWs.

Speaking of which, the BMW 3 Series is the ATS’ main target in the crowded entry-level luxury sedan segment. Naturally, a head-to-head comparison with the BMW is in the works, so stay tuned to see how they match up.

The new ATS still looks nice, but I love my CTS-V sedan. ( ALL 556 hp of her ! )

Hi WOT, I drove a 97 M3 for 9 years, so I appreciate BMWs. But I have really been pulling for the Cadillac ATS. Compared to the CTS, I like the ATS's more subdued styling. I find the extreme care the engineers and designers have put into the car inspiring. With the Ford GT40 efforts at LeMans, we know US car makers can make great cars when they want to. Your WOT report today and other reports are very encouraging. I'm hoping that the ATS turns out to be inspiring in the comparison testing as well.
