Move Over, M5: Jaguar Launches XJ Speed Pack with Nurburgring Taxis

#Jaguar, #M5

If you've ever wanted to go around the Nurburgring very quickly, but lack either the requisite skills or a fast car, you've had two options to quench your thirst: buy a video game and lap the virtual ‘Ring, or go to Germany and buy an 8-10 minute ride in a BMW M5. But now there’s another option: in celebration of the new XJ Sport and Speed Pack, Jaguar is pressing its go-fast luxury sedans into a ‘Ring Taxi service.

The cars are based on the existing XJ Supersport sedans, which have supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engines making 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque. While today's XJs are electronically limited to 155 mph, Jaguar recently introduced a sport pack, which adds a more aggressive aerodynamic kit and sports seats, as well as 20-inch venom five-spoke wheels.

From there, Jaguar offers one more option level, called the speed pack. No extra power is packed underhood, but the speed pack adds 19 mph to the electronic speed limiter, which now stands at 174 mph. Seeing as the optional Sport Pack’s aerodynamic kit is allegedly key to reducing lift at that speed, Jaguar forces buyers seeking the Speed Pack to first opt for the Sport Pack.

As for the Jaguar Ring Taxis, the cars are all equipped with the sport and speed packs, but are also modified on the inside. Jaguar removed all of the stock seats and replaced them with four racing-style bucket seats with four-point harnesses, and then installed a custom roll-cage to make sure that things stay safe incase something takes a turn for the worst.

Jaguar hasn't announced any availability for Ring Taxi tickets, but if the BMW program is any indication, don't expect them to be abundant or inexpensive: a 9-ish minute ride in an M5 has a months-long waiting list and a 216 euro ($281) price tag.
