Morgan's Modern Car: EvaGT Comes to Pebble Beach, Does 170 mph, 33 mpg

Think that Morgan is hopelessly stuck in the 20th century? Are wooden frames, SU carburetors, and black exhaust smoke images you'd commonly associate with the famed British sports car marque? It might be time to readjust your thinking. Meet the EvaGT.

Having made its world debut at California's world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the Morgan EvaGT is a car that shrugs off the antiquated Morgan image while retaining much of what makes a Morgan unique - most notably, in the styling department. Those broad front fender arches are present and accounted for, but they're restyled into a graceful, thoroughly contemporary flowing form. The windscreen is swept back and looks very aerodynamic indeed, while the metallic grey six-spoke alloy wheels and massive AP Racing brake calipers and discs look like they were pulled directly from a 12 Hours of Sebring entrant.

Out back, a twin tip exhaust system is centered in the rear valance and both front and rear and there's no doubt to the Morgan's intent. But the front view looks downright menacing, with a huge, traditionally shaped grille spliting two slanting, narrowed LED headlights that look as disgruntled as a Morgan +4 owner who's discovered his wire-spoked wheel's gone out of true.

The chassis itself is constructed from bonded aluminum while under the hood sits a BMW inline-six engine - the 3.0-liter twin-turbo variant to be precise, which produces roughly 300 horsepower. This can be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, but here's guessing 99 percent of EvaGTs are sold with the traditional six-speed manual.

Morgan has been hard at work to ensure that its modern sports car also fits into a modern 'green' environmental policy. To that end, the bodywork has been made to cut through air as efficiently as possible, with reduced shut lines, flush door handles, and concealed windshield wipers. The result is a respectable 33 mpg, despite its relatively heavy (for a Morgan) curb weight of just over 2700 pounds. The 0 to 60 mph sprint is said to be dispatched in just 4.5 seconds, while the predicted top speed is 170 mph.

Want one? The production run is limited, with an initial run of just 100 cars, and is said to begin in 2012. The final price is not yet available, but $8000 deposits are currently being taken.
