Though it's hard to keep track of every special-edition Mustang that debuts, the annual one-off Mustang revealed for the Experimental Aircraft Association Airventure celebration continues to catch our eye. Every year, an aviation-themed Mustang is auctioned off for charity. Last year featured a Mustang GT customized to look like a U.S. Navy Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornet, while the year before that featured a Mustang tribute to the SR-71 Blackbird. This year's 2013 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Red Tails edition pays homage to the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the U.S. Army Air Force's first squadron of African-American pilots, and were recently the subject of George Lucas' movie “Red Tails.” After lobbying hard for meaningful missions, the Tuskegee Airmen went on to escort B-17 and B-24 bombers as they bombed Nazi-occupied Europe. This year's tribute to the airmen is especially fitting since the original Ford Mustang was named after the Army Air Force's P-51 Mustang fighter, which happens to be the fighter the Tuskegee Airmen are most famous for flying.
As we've previously reported, this particular 2013 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca has its 5.0-liter V-8 fitted with a Ford Racing supercharger, gets suspension improvements courtesy of Ford Racing, Brembo brakes, and unique 20-inch wheels.
The Mustang Red Tails edition sports an aircraft-themed livery, complete with Tuskegee Airmen logo, a red tail (the Tuskegee Airmen's signature), and yellow checkered nose art. This Mustang also gets a unique exhaust system designed to mimic that of the P-51 fighter plane. Inside, this one-off Mustang gets the “Red Tails” logo embossed on its seats, as well as black and red upholstery.
This Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca Red Tails edition will be auctioned off for charity Thursday, July 26 at the EAA AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wis. Last year's Blue-Angels themed Mustang raised over $400,000 for charity.
