Mitsubishi Previews Three Concepts for Tokyo

Mitsubishi Tokyo concept cars group

Mitsubishi will bring three concept cars to the Tokyo Motor Show in November. These three concepts, called GC-PHEV, XR-PHEV, and AR, preview possible future SUV and crossover models from Mitsubishi and highlight the brand’s plug-in hybrid technology that has already debuted on the Outlander crossover. Before they make their official debut next month, Mitsubishi recently released a teaser image of the concepts along with a sketch of the GC-PHEV.

The GC, or Grand Cruiser PHEV is a full-size SUV with what Mitsubishi calls a “high output plug-in hybrid electric” drivetrain mated with Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel-drive system. This concept may preview a new generation of the Mitsubishi Montero SUV, called Pajero elsewhere in the world. The Mitsubishi Montero departed from the U.S. market in 2006 and the current Pajero has gone relatively unchanged since the most recent generation debuted in 2006. It’s unclear whether such an SUV would come to the U.S., but considering that Mitsubishi’s only successful models in the U.S. these days are the Outlander and Outlander Sport crossover, we wouldn’t rule out the possibility.

In this same vein, the second concept previews a compact SUV and is called the XR-PHEV, which stands for Crossover Runner. This vehicle also uses a plug-in hybrid drivetrain and puts an emphasis on eco-friendliness and lightweight construction. Mitsubishi also says that this concept has a body style “resembling a sport coupe.” This may preview a Nissan Juke competitor from Mitsubishi that could slot in below the Outlander Sport compact crossover.

The last concept, called AR, or Active Runabout, is a compact MPV. Our bet is that this model is unlikely for the U.S., but Mitsubishi says it uses a small, direct-injection turbo engine that could make it to our shores in future Mitsubishi products, depending on the brand’s fate in the U.S.

Keep an eye out next month for more information on these Mitsubishi concepts.
