Headlining Mitsubishi's display at the 2009 New York auto show will be a sportier take on the company's compact crossover. The Outlander GT Prototype shown in these teaser shots will feature a more powerful engine and styling influenced by the Lancer Evolution X.

Probably the first thing you'll notice on the Outlander GT is the Evo's signature "Jet Fighter" grille. Flanking the grille will be a set of Lancer-inspired headlights. The revised grille and headlights are just part of what Mitsubishi is says will be a "number of exciting design elements."

The company also said we can expect better performance and fuel economy numbers from the 3.0-liter MIVEC V-6 engine. The improved fuel economy is due in part to a new technology called Idle Neutral Logic. This technology saves fuel by automatically shifting the transmission into neutral when the vehicle is at a standstill.

Mitsubishi said little else about the concept. For full details we'll have to wait for the Outlander GT's official reveal at the New York auto show on April 9.
