Mitsubishi MMR2025 Concept Previews Rally Cars of the Future

Mitsubishi Mmr2025 Concept

We're used to seeing unusual vehicles entered into the LA Auto Show's annual Design Challenge, but this - Mitsubishi's MMR2025, a rally car for the year 2025 - is just plain weird.

From what we see, the MMR2025 looks less like a Lancer and more like an F/A-18 fighter jet.; The cabin's short and ovoid, but it is noticeably devoid of glass.; Designers envision the cockpit as being lined with a 360-degree panoramic screen, which constantly displays images from exterior cameras.; Though in theory it could eliminate the blind spot, we wonder how often said cameras would fail in the rally race environment.

Equally radical are the MMR2025's wheels.; Eight mini-wheels lie at each hub, each of which is powered by an individual electric motor, and are positioned away from the hubs upon spokes.; While we could see the advantage with such a setup in rock-climbing, Mitsubishi also says the technology could allow the car to be crab-steered.

Though the design will officially be unveiled at November's Los Angeles auto show, don't look for the MMR2025 to take center stage at Mitsubishi's display.; Though it may appear as a quarter-scale model, the futuristic rally car will - for now - remain a flight of fancy.
