Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR, VW Golf R Battle it Out in Episode 5 of Head 2 Head

#VW, #Golf

While it’s likely no one will ever cross-shop the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR and 2012 Volkswagen Golf R, the two sports cars do share a few similarities. Both have a turbocharged four-cylinder that sends power to all four wheels and offer the practicality of four doors. In the latest Head 2 Head video, Automobile West Coast editor Jason Cammisa spends time in the two sporty four-doors to see which is better.

His time with the two sporty four-doors starts with an easy drive by the beach. Here, he laments the Mitsu Evo’s low-grade interior and build quality that even rental car companies would shy away from. The Volkswagen Golf R is luxurious by comparison, with leather and metallic-like accents he says would fit well in cars twice its $37,000 price tag. One car, however, has the unfortunate engine note of a kitchen appliance, Cammisa explains.

Next up is a day at the track. Here, the Evo has the horsepower advantage at 291 compared to the Golf R’s 256 hp output. The Evo only needs 5.1 seconds to go from 0-60 mph, while the VW isn’t far behind at 5.8 seconds. Cammisa is amazed by the Evo’s computer-controlled all-wheel-drive system but also loves the Golf R’s precise gearbox and engine note. The losing car falls behind because it lacks an important “off switch.” Find out what car that was in episode 5 of Head 2 Head.
