With more electric cars and alterative fuel vehicles becoming available every day, the future of transportation is within our grasp. Each year Green Car Journal picks one of these current or upcoming transit devices for its Green Car Vision Award and for 2009 the Mitsubishi i MiEV is one of the five nominees.
The i MiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) is a four seat, all-electric city car boasting a 16 kW lithium-ion battery pack that gives it a 100 mile range. The electric motor is rear-mounted and the 330-volt battery is located under the floor to give occupants more room in the cabin.
Mitsubishi fleet tested the i MiEV for two years in Japan. In the U.S. the i MiEV is being tested by two California utility companies. It is expected to go on sale in Japan next summer for about $25,000.
Mitsubishi's little electric car will face some strong competition in this year's awards. The other four nominees are the Chevrolet Volt, Fisker Karma, Honda FCX Clarity and the MINI E. The winner will be declared at the Washington Auto Show in Washington D.C. on February 3.
