Mini Has Last Laugh with Mini Cooper Yachtsman, Caravan Joke

Mini had the last laugh yesterday during April Fools’ Day, announcing the debut of two wild niche vehicles. A new Mini Cooper Yachtsman was rumored to make a debut at this week's New York auto show, and some vacationers may have become excited with the announcement of a new Mini caravan and roof-top tent.

The Mini Cooper Yachtsman is described as a 169.8-inch long Mini Cooper painted in Reef Blue metallic paint, wearing a "shark-resistant" undercoating, silver alloy wheels, and matching silver rudder. The boat also sports an exhaust resembling a snorkel on top of the hood, and an antenna doubling as a 20-ft white sail. Inside, The Yachtsman has waterproof upholstery, seat cushions that double as flotation devices, and room for two to sleep. If this already doesn’t already put doubt into readers’ minds about whether this is a joke, perhaps further details will. Mini claims the Yachtsman is powered by a 181-hp 1.6-liter twin-turbocharged I-4, allowing for a 61-knot top speed in water. Despite its 4600-pound weight, the Yachtsman sprints from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds on land, and 2.4 minutes on water. Mini's pretend price for the Yachtsman? A whopping $236,000.

Mini’s new line of camping gear was a bit more believable, considering Mini showed the Clubvan concept at this year's Geneva show. A new Crowley caravan, which measured about five inches wider than a Clubman, features cramped camping amenities including a gas stove, water tank with a pump, dishwasher, solar module, refrigerator, TV and DVD system, stereo system, and room for two to sleep inside. Mini also offered a roof-top tent that could be mounted to other Mini models.
