Mercedes-Benz Launches 487-hp C63 AMG Performance Package Plus

A normal Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG boasts a 451-hp V-8 that is capable of catapulting the car from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Impressive, but if you’re still wanting for power, Mercedes-Benz has launched the new 2010 C63 AMG Performance Package Plus, which packs 487 ponies underhood.

Opting for the package bumps the 6.2-liter V-8 to 487 hp, 37 hp more than a stock C63 AMG. Torque remains unchanged at 443 lb.-ft. The extra power brings the C63 AMG Performance Package Plus within 13 hp of its DTM race car siblings, and drops the 0-60 mph time to 4.4 seconds. Sprinting from 0-120 mph now takes only 13.9 seconds, 1.3 seconds faster than a stock C63.

The extra power is largely garnered thanks to a few engine parts cribbed from the new SLS AMG supercar. The forged pistons, connecting rods, and lightweight crankshaft come straight from the SLS, and help increase the engine’s power and responsiveness. Although the engines are quite similar, the SLS’s V-8, at 563 hp, remains the most powerful of the pair.

The Performance Package Plus also adds a new high-performance braking system that includes carbon-ceramic brake rotors and aluminum hub centers. A new carbon fiber lip spoiler has also been added to help C63 sedans increase downforce at speed.

The new Performance Package Plus is available on both the C63 AMG sedan and wagon models, and can now be ordered in Europe for €7080.50 ($10,565) on the sedan and €6426 ($9588) for the estate. Unfortunately for those in North America (ourselves included), this package may remain a European exclusive…

I am seriously considering a C63 after having driven one. It just gets the adrenalin going that I didn't ven experience in a Mustang GT. But $10K for an improvement of one-tenth of a second to 60mph? I also read the part about 13.9 seconds to 120mph. I wonder if this replaces the current AMG performance package (174 mph limiter, limited-slip differential, compound brake, AMG track-calibrated suspension, AMG leather ) for only $4,050 or if it's a separate option? I just don't get why M-B insists on nickel-and-diming their customers? Don't get me wrong. I love AMGs having previously owned a CLK55. Just stop charging me for every little option that already comes standard in less-expensive cars.My salesman was red-faced when I kidded him about the $400 multi-media interface kit on my wife's GLK. I told him my daughter's '07 Mazda 3 had this as standard equipment for $20k.Then there's the matter of the nav system. They should have just bought Honda's system. The one in my daughter Civic SI is so much easier to set up and use. That Taurus SHO is beginning to sound tempting.
