Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Concept Teased Before Frankfurt Debut

Mercedes-Benz-S-Class-Coupe-concept-rendering

In addition to the new 2015 GLA crossover, Mercedes-Benz will show the new Concept S-Class Coupe, a thinly-disguised version of the new large luxury coupe due to launch next year. Though we won’t see the concept in its entirety until next week teaser sketches did pop up this morning on Mercedes-Benz’s official Facebook page.

The rendering is nothing short of dramatic. Predictably, the car looks long, low, and wide, and is surprisingly curvaceous. While the S-Class sedan’s front fascia and grille is more upright and regal, the S-Class Coupe’s nose in this rendering appears longer, slimmer, and a little more rounded.

The wide, flat hood is accented with two large strakes that run from cowl to nose cone. Front fenders seem to gently arc into a subtle shoulder midway through the front doors, before the rear fenders curve up and outward.

How much of this is merely artistic license? Very little, if previous spy shots are any indication. Arguably, the only cues that seem more restrained on early prototypes are the upswept lightkicker just above the rocker sills, and the tire/wheel package. We wouldn’t be too surprised if some cues, notably the larger wheels, single-bar grille insert, and fender vents, will appear only on AMG-grade models. If it looks vaguely like the CL, it should, since the S-Class Coupe technically replaces the CL in Mercedes’ portfolio.

Given that, it’s fairly easy to predict what forms the new S-Class Coupe will ultimately be offered in. The S550 will likely serve as the base model, and pack a 455-hp, 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. Desire twelve-cylinder power? An S600 sedan is expected to launch this fall, and there’s no reason a S600 coupe couldn’t launch at the same time to replace the current CL600. Performance junkies will likely opt for a S63 AMG model, packing the same hand-built 585-hp, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 as the recently announced 2014 S63 AMG sedan. If that’s still not enough, an S65 AMG, complete with a twin-turbocharged V-12 said to produce somewhere close to 635 hp, is expected to join the portfolio in mid-2014. Although the CL550 is presently the only version offered with all-wheel-drive, both the S550 and S63 AMG may be offered in concert with Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

We’ll know more in due time, but if nothing else, expect to have a good look at what the new S-Class Coupe will look like on Tuesday.
