Mercedes-Benz AMG Teases Special-Edition Car For 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz AMG released teaser photos today of a special-edition car that it will reveal next week at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show. Though there are no details yet on just which car these teasers preview, the images show a car with extremely wide tires and enormous cross-drilled brake discs.

One strong possibility is that this special-edition car is a version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT. We reported as far back as 2012 that the supercar would go out of production by 2014, and more recently reported that the SLS will be replaced by a smaller two-seat sports coupe. It's possible, then, that AMG plans to launch a special edition of the SLS AMG GT as a sort of swan song before that car is discontinued. Strengthening this argument is the fact that one teaser photo clearly shows narrow air intakes that match the lower front fascia of the current Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT, albeit with an extra carbon-fiber lip attached.

If this special edition is indeed a final run for the current SLS AMG GT, it serves as a warm-up before we see the Mercedes-Benz SLC AMG that will replace the SLS in late 2014. As our spy photos show, the next-generation two-seater will retain the SLS's long-hood, two-seat design, but it will be downsized so as better to fight sports cars like the Porsche 911. A recent report suggests the car will be called simply the GT, and that as much as 500 hp will come from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8.

For now, we have only a pair of teaser photos from AMG, although the high-performance group promises, "Over the next few days we will uncover a new member of the AMG family, bit by bit." Expect the special-edition car to make its official debut on Wednesday, November 20, at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show.
