Maserati has finally pulled the wraps of the Ghibli, its new smaller sedan that will be fully revealed later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show. The Ghibli is positioned as a "sports executive" sedan that will take on the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
As our earlier spy photos showed, the Maserati Ghibli looks like a scaled-down version of the new Quattroporte. A wide grille with vertical slats dominates the car's nose, the slopes down dramatically into squinty headlights, and the fenders rise dramatically over the front wheels. Each front fender sports a trio of small vents; the car's tail has a stubby trunk with curved character lines that follow from the rear fenders. The interior of the Maserati Ghibli is highlighted by a large touchscreen on the center stack, topped by an analog clock, as well as red leather dashboard accents, a chunky shifter for the automatic transmission, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a simple two-binnacle instrument cluster with a central LCD display.
Maserati says the Ghibli will offer two gasoline turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engines, and a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6. An eight-speed automatic is standard, and buyers get a choice between rear- and "Q4" all-wheel drive. The Ghibli is the first-ever Maserati production car with a diesel engine. There is a chance the Quattroporte’s 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 could join the Ghibli range at a later date.
The company claims the Ghibli will attract, "premium executive car buyers [who] are looking to make an individual statement through a car that is distinctive, elegant and luxurious." More seriously, the car is intended to steal sales from the German luxury brands.
The Ghibli is a key part of Maserati's bold plan to expand its range, broaden its appeal, and ramp annual sales up to 50,000 units globally by 2015. In 2012, Maserati sold 6307 cars worldwide.
The Maserati Ghibli will make its public debut later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show in China.
